Little Bitty Pet Peeve

It drives me crazy when assignment descriptions are longer than the response you are allowed to turn in.  Like, really, if you can't ask the question in less than 2 pages, how am I supposed to answer it in such?

Job descriptions and cover letters are apparently the same.  I am currently applying to one job that offers a full 1-page job description and, according to Career Services, my cover letter is supposed to be (how ambiguous is this?) "significantly less than 1 page with an aesthetically pleasing amount of white space."  But I have all of the qualifications the organization is asking for!  And I can only tell them that using the full page! 

I have to admit, it's tempting just to write, "Dear ____, I have all of your desired qualifications.  If this is not clear from my resume, I am happy to elaborate in an interview.  Sincerely, Claire."

Oh well, back to work! Back to writing and revising!

My school has an identity problem...

Whew, it's been a while since I wrote last, but school keeps me so busy!  Especially now that I spend half my time teaching and the other half divided between networking and applying for jobs, working on my master's project, and oh yeah classes too. 

Speaking of school, the University of Michigan has a serious identity crisis.  As I've been working with several departments on various projects, it becomes ever more clear that we just don't know what to call ourselves.  The University of Michigan - Ann Arbor =  UMich, UM, U-M, U of M, Michigan.  Geez, it was so much simpler to just go to a school called Brown--no nicknames there.
